Broaks Wood

Broaks Wood covers an area of 62 hectares, the majority of which is designated as an Ancient Woodland site and has probably existed as a woodland since the end of the last Ice Age, 12,000 years ago. Broaks wood is managed with conservation as a priority, but an average of 500 tonnes of timber are harvested annually. Coppicing is practiced on some broad-leaved species which benefits wildlfe by adding to the diversity of the habitat. Few sites in Essex rival Broaks Wood for its diversity of species. Over 200 species of wildflowers, 25 species of butterflies, 4 species of amphibians, 2 species of reptile and 3 species of bat have been recorded here.

There are some great walks in the wood one which can take you right through to the ouskirts of Halstead. The main entrance is on the A1017 on the Gosfield Road at Cut Maple With a large car parking area. As with all sites of this importance please keep dogs on leads and respect the country code leave no litter.
